Auto & Tech | Kuya Mark in Conversation with Kevin Abalos: Leadership, Bootstrapping, and the Road Ahead for AutoServed | Magandang araw, mga kaibigan! It’s Kuya Mark here, and today, we’re switching gears to talk about a ride of a different kind. I recently sat down with my co-founder, Kevin Abalos, for an insightful tête-à-tête about leadership, the journey of AutoServed, and the exciting road ahead.
Leading by Example
First, we dove into the essence of leadership. For Kevin, being a good leader is about guiding the team toward a common vision. He spoke about the importance of transparent communication, empowering team members, and fostering a positive culture that encourages innovation and growth. A leader is both a mentor and a mentee, continuously learning and adapting while helping others grow.
As AutoServed’s new CEO, Kevin has big shoes to fill. But his unique brand of leadership, which emphasizes empowerment, collaboration, and continuous learning, brings fresh and promising energy to the role. These are values that Kevin says he learned from his early days as a business owner and continue to guide his decision-making at AutoServed.
Bootstrapping to Success
We then ventured into our journey of finding product-market fit while bootstrapping AutoServed. Our experience has been nothing short of an exhilarating roller-coaster ride. Kevin shared how we navigated the tight curves and steep slopes by being resourceful, flexible, and staying laser-focused on our mission. While bootstrapping has its challenges, Kevin highlighted that it also allowed us to stay nimble, make swift decisions, and keep our core customer needs at the forefront.
Kevin is not your typical CEO. He kicked the ground running with a brick-and-mortar business. That exposure to the grassroots of commerce gave him valuable insights into the world of business, the challenges faced by ordinary entrepreneurs, and the hard work that goes into building something from the ground up.
“We believe in bootstrapping our way up,” Kevin tells me over a cup of coffee. It’s this mentality that has driven AutoServed to seek its product-market fit steadily, relying on customer feedback, constant innovation, and a lot of hard work. It’s not always the smoothest road, but as any motorist knows, it’s the bumpy roads that test and ultimately strengthen your vehicle’s resilience.
Passing the Steering Wheel
Perhaps one of the most pivotal discussions was Kevin taking over the CEO role at AutoServed. We’ve been side-by-side on this ride since the start, and I couldn’t be more confident about passing the baton (or in our case, the steering wheel) to him. With his strategic vision, unwavering commitment, and grounded leadership, Kevin is well-equipped to steer AutoServed to new heights while I take on the COO role, ensuring we deliver on our operational promises to our customers.
From Brick and Mortar to Digital Highways
Interestingly, Kevin’s beginnings as a brick-and-mortar business owner have significantly influenced his decision-making at AutoServed. The tangible aspects of traditional business—customer interaction, service quality, and trust—have guided our digital transformation. We’re not just building a platform; we’re translating the authenticity and personal touch of a physical store to the online space.
As Kevin puts it, “It’s not about replacing the physical with digital, but enhancing it. It’s about using technology to amplify the positive aspects of traditional business.”
The Journey Ahead
As we wrapped up our chat, the air was charged with excitement and anticipation. With Kevin at the helm, we’re all set to drive AutoServed forward, one milestone at a time.
However, our conversation wasn’t solely focused on business and leadership. It soon became evident that Kevin is a man of diverse interests and pursuits outside the office, which add another layer to his persona.
Kevin is an avid golfer, a sport known for its demand for precision, strategy, and patience – traits that Kevin has brought into his leadership at AutoServed. But for him, golf is more than just a game. He sees it as a vehicle to build relationships, encourage friendly competition, and promote cooperation among the vibrant community of startup founders.
“Golf provides a unique environment for relaxation and conversation. It’s an opportunity to foster friendships and collaborations off the work desk. Golf has a way of leveling the playing field – no matter your professional background, on the green, it’s just you, the club, and the ball.”
Kevin’s passion for fostering community extends beyond the golf course. Last year, he spearheaded a motor show project for JCI as part of his initiation. Timed to coincide with Father’s Day, the event was a roaring success, drawing car enthusiasts and families for a day filled with camaraderie, cool cars, and charity.
The event embodied Kevin’s vision for community projects – fun, inclusive, and impactful. It not only offered a platform for car lovers to come together and share their passion but also created a space for families to celebrate Father’s Day, reinforcing JCI’s community spirit and commitment to societal development.
With every swing on the golf course, every event he organizes, Kevin is not just pursuing a personal hobby or executing a project. He is continuously building relationships, fostering community spirit, and embracing the values that guide him as a leader at AutoServed.
So as we journey forward, let’s remember to take a leaf from Kevin’s book: to nurture our passions, build meaningful relationships, and enjoy every moment of the ride. As we drive towards our goals, let’s not forget to appreciate the journey, the detours, the pit stops, and the unexpected sights we see along the way. whether you’re bootstrapping a start-up or hitting the open road, it’s all about the journey, not just the destination. And with strong leadership, a shared vision, and a dose of perseverance, there’s no limit to where we can go.
So here’s to new beginnings and the road ahead. Tara, byahe tayo!
