Auto And Tech | Mitsubishi Power, a power solutions brand of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), said today that the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of a 1,400 MW natural gas-fired gas turbine combined cycle power plant was completed successfully and on schedule. The commercial operation of the second M701JAC gas turbine for Hin Kong Power business Limited, a joint venture business formed by RATCH Group Public Company Limited (RATCH) and Gulf Energy Development Public Company Limited (GULF), represented a significant milestone.
Located about 100 kilometres west of Bangkok, the project includes two cutting-edge M701JAC gas turbines. The first unit commenced commercial operation in March 2024, followed by the second in January 2025, completing the plant’s full capacity installation on time. Mitsubishi Power will provide long-term maintenance for the turbines under a 25-year Long Term Service Agreement (LTSA), and the facility will supply electricity to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) under a long-term power purchase agreement, ensuring that high-efficiency and reliable energy is available to meet the country’s power demand.

This project comes after Mitsubishi Power completed the landmark 5,300 MW GTCC power plant project in Thailand’s Rayong and Chonburi districts, which included eight M701JAC gas turbines built in collaboration with Gulf Energy Development Public Company Limited and Mitsui & Co., Ltd. With this latest milestone, all ten M701JAC units from both projects have been delivered on time, totalling 120,000 cumulative running hours, confirming their exceptional operational reliability and performance.
Mitsubishi Power has supplied a wide range of equipment, including 22 gas turbines to the RATCH and GULF projects, totalling more than 14,000 MW of power generation capacity in Thailand.
Global orders for the JAC gas turbine continue to rise, with total orders recently exceeding 100 units by 2024. The JAC gas turbine achieves a combined cycle efficiency of more than 64% and passes severe carbon emission reduction regulations. Its operational flexibility, including faster startup times and greater load-following capability, making it a critical solution for balancing power demand in grids that are becoming increasingly reliant on renewable energy sources.
