Auto And Tech | HIROSHIMA | Mazda Motor Corporation (Mazda) has announced plans to develop a new module pack plant for automobile cylindrical lithium-ion battery cells in Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. The new plant will manufacture modules and packs of vehicle cylindrical lithium-ion battery cells purchased from Panasonic Energy Co., Ltd. (Panasonic Energy). The completed battery packs will be put in Mazda’s first battery EV, which will be built on a specific EV platform at Mazda’s plant in Japan. The annual output capacity is expected to be 10 GWh.
Mazda is steadily preparing for electrification technologies under the 2030 Management Policy, based on a multi-solution strategy that provides a variety of technological options to meet customer needs and regulatory changes, with the goal of contributing to the social issue of reducing global warming. In the field of batteries, one of the key components of electrified vehicles, the company signed an agreement with Panasonic Energy in May 2023 to procure cylindrical lithium-ion batteries for automotive use, and in September 2024, the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) certified the plan to expand battery production and technology development through this collaboration as a “plan to ensure stable supply of storage batteries.” Mazda intends to provide its customers with distinctive battery-electric vehicles that offer a high degree of design, convenience, and driving range by utilizing battery module packs made at the new plant. The plant will also help to create jobs and stimulate the local economy.
