Auto And Tech| Las Vegas | Toyota Motor Corporation (“Toyota”) stated at CES 2025 that it had completed Phase 1 development of Toyota Woven City (“Woven City”), its mobility test course. Phase 1 is set to debut in the fall of 2025 or soon after.
Toyota first declared its transformation into a mobility company at CES 2018, and at CES 2020, it introduced the Woven City concept, which was created in conjunction with Woven by Toyota (“WbyT”) to demonstrate Toyota’s long-term commitment to influencing the future of mobility.
Woven City has made steady progress since its groundbreaking ceremony on February 23, 2021, at the former location of Toyota Motor East Japan’s (“TMEJ”) Higashi-Fuji Plant in Susono City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. Phase 1 structures, designated for co-creation activities, were finished in October 2024. Preparations for the official launch are under ongoing.
Woven City’s Phase 1 has previously received recognition for its environmentally responsible and human-centered design, which aims to improve people’s overall quality of life. It achieved Japan’s first LEED for Communities* Platinum certification, the system’s highest level.
Along with Phase 1 preparations, a former TMEJ Higashi-Fuji Plant facility is being renovated into a Woven City manufacturing hub, and site preparation for Phase 2 has begun. Insights from Phase 1 will assist refine plans for Phase 2 and subsequent stages, as well as continuously improve the test course’s functioning.
Woven City is a mobility test course in which “Inventors” with a dedication to working “for someone other than themselves” can create, test, and validate novel goods and services. Toyota and Toyota Group enterprises, such as WbyT, are among the inventors, along with external companies, startups, and individual entrepreneurs. Woven City provides a one-of-a-kind environment with the tools and services required to address societal concerns and create future-focused value by integrating Toyota’s decades of manufacturing expertise and WbyT’s software capabilities. Woven City is also in ongoing talks with previously mentioned companies such ENEOS Corporation, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT), and Rinnai Corporation.
Woven City will also be inviting external businesses, entrepreneurs, colleges, and research organizations to participate in an accelerator program beginning in the summer of 2025.
In Woven City, residents and visitors will play just as important a part as inventors. These individuals, known as ‘Weavers,’ have a love for the ‘extension of mobility’ and a commitment to creating a more prosperous society. Weavers’ participation in co-creation activities will help Woven City reach its full potential.
The first 100 residents of Woven City, principally Toyota and WbyT professionals and their families, are expected to participate in co-creation activities upon its formal debut in fall 2025 or later. The group will progressively grow to include external inventors and their families. Phase 1 is intended to house roughly 360 individuals, with the entire population, including Phase 2 and following stages, expected to be around 2,000. Initially, visitation will be limited to linked parties, with intentions to invite the general public to join as Weavers in co-creation activities beginning in FY2026 or later.
Woven City also serves as a test case for Toyota’s transition to a mobility corporation. Toyota and WbyT intend to redefine mobility by broadening its definition beyond transportation to include the movement of people, products, information, and energy for the benefit of individuals and society. Woven community, a human-centered community, prioritizes inventors and weavers to create new opportunities and achieve “Well-being for All”. WbyT has also announced an investment in Interstellar Technologies Inc., with the goal of increasing mobility from land, sea, and air to space. Toyota will use its knowledge to enable rocket mass production.
