(via JCN Newswire) – TOKYO, May 31, 2021 – The partners of the Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub, particularly Shell, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), Vattenfall and the municipal firm Warme Hamburg may continue to be confident about securing EU financing to implement their plans. The initiative in Hamburg has been included in the German Federal Ministry of Economics’ shortlist of projects under consideration for funding under the EU’s “Important Projects of Common European Interest” (IPCEI) initiative.
The shortlist is made up of 62 projects chosen from a pool of over 200 that submitted for financing through the IPCEI program. The Hamburg Gas Network’s HH-WIN project, which will build the pipeline infrastructure for hydrogen transportation in Hamburg, is also on the short list.
Shell, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), Vattenfall, and the municipal corporation Warme Hamburg are collaborating to manufacture hydrogen from wind and solar energy at the Hamburg-Moorburg power plant and use it in the surrounding area. The site will be developed into a so-called “Green Energy Hub” in addition to the construction of a scalable electrolyser with an initial output of 100 megawatts. This includes determining the extent to which the Moorburg location’s existing infrastructure can be used to generate energy from renewable sources. Concepts for the essential logistical chains and hydrogen storage alternatives will be addressed in this context. Production of green hydrogen is expected to begin in 2025, depending on the final investment choice and the current status of development, once the site has been cleared, making the electrolyser one of Europe’s largest facilities.
The four partner firms consider the energy location to be in excellent condition for future use. It is connected to both the national 380,000-volt transmission network and the City of Hamburg’s 110,000-volt network. In addition, international ships can call at the area directly and use the quay and port facilities as an import terminal. In the next ten years, the municipal gas network firm also plans to establish a hydrogen network in the port, and is already constructing the necessary distribution infrastructure. Numerous prospective clients for green hydrogen are located near the site, thereby enabling the project to cover the whole hydrogen value chain – from generation through storage, transport and consumption in various sectors. With these conditions in place, the Moorburg location is ideal for the German federal state of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and Northern Germany, and might serve as a potential launch pad for the hydrogen economy.
The next phase is a so-called “matchmaking” at EU level, which tries to bring together projects with a similar focus in the various EU Member States.
